March 30, 2006

a very cute child The birth of punk was apparently 30 years ago today. This was indeed one of the most important days in world history, the birth of one of the world's finest minds occurred on this day. It was probably the birth of this exceptional person that proved the catalyst for the punk movement itself, and has been the inspiration for most of the music, art and drama produced in the past 30 years.

But what of the pop history of this important date? In Australia Queen were at number 1 with Bohemian Rhapsody, In the US it was The Four Seasons with December '63 (Oh what a night) and in the UK it was The Brotherhood of Man with Save your kisses for me.

Feel their TealFeel the Teal!
I think my chance of winning the basketball prediction game aren't too good as the seahawks got knocked out on the first day instead of winning as I predicted. They lost to George Washington Colonials, 88-85 in extra time.

"If UNCW fans in Greensboro were jumping out of their skin, they were rivaled by the crowd watching the game at the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s student union dining room Thursday night.

Tied at 79-79, that led to overtime. It was a gut-wrenching game as each team volleyed point for point at the end. The noise level reached deafening proportions. Women began uttering inhuman, high-pitched squeals. Men pounded the air with their fists.

As if possessed, fans chanted: “Let’s go Seahawks! Let’s go Seahawks!”

The 200-some spectators at UNCW weren’t watching the game in person, but they may as well have been. “If it’s exciting here, you can just imagine what it’s like to be there,” said Eisman, who wore a teal Seahawks T-shirt.

A lull ensued as eighth-seeded George Washington hit one of its last shots. In an emotional climax, UNCW lost 85-88."

Now available for your perusal...Photos from Nicaragua
I should warn you, there's quite alot of craters and rocks and other geological things. Theres also quite a few of the science equipment we had with us, some of them are quite pretty.Science at Masaya

March madness is about to start over US of A. This is their college basketball tournament, which people in Wilmington, North Carolina get very excited about. I expect they'll be even more excited this year with the seahawks (UNC Wilmington) making it into the playoffs (32 teams out of the country). My predictions can be found here with UNCW going all the way, even if 68% of the America thinks they're going out in the first round.

I have returned from Nicaragua with a bit of a sun tan, peeling hands and for some reason a bottle of 7 yr old Flor De Cana Rum. An odd choice of souvenir given that following extensive research I concluded the worst three drinks in the world were Campari, Navy rum and Tequila. It was pretty cheap so I couldn't say no.

I had a good time checking out the volcanoes and running strange experiments. We even had a day off to go explore, sadly the cloud forest we tried to see was closed for the day and the crater pool we went to swim in was a bit intimidating. Was still very nice, I liked Granada too, looked like you think Latin America will look like. The volcano bit was pretty impressive, seeing oodles of gas burbling out of the ground and hearing lava swish about. Some photos will be available soon once I've had some time to see what there is.
