N.C. Cohabitation Law Struck Down, But Legal Fight Over The Issue Might Not Be Over"A North Carolina Superior Court judge has issued a formal ruling declaring that the state's law barring unmarried couples from living together is unconstitutional and blocked state officials from enforcing it."
"The law, passed in 1805, says 'If any man and woman, not being married to each other, shall lewdly and lasciviously associate, bed and cohabit together, they shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.'...About 144,000 unmarried couples live together in North Carolina, according to the 2000 census."

W I L C O - N E W S I'm a bit confused about subscribing to podcasts, but Wilco have one here and there are many songs to listen to if you click on the link.
I finally got to see
The Bluetones yesterday at the Zodiac, a few minutes walk from my house. Every time they played in the past I've been off on field work or watching CD:UK or something. They were good and played a nice selection of old and new tunes and had entertaining chit chat and seemed very pleasant gents. As if that wasn't enough excitement for one weekend I also cooked some tea for some mates and got to see my nephews AND saw this AMAZING bit of artwork in hollyoaks.

Tomorrow (Sept 22nd) is apparently
World Carfree Day . This website doesn't mention the day they've chosen anywhere obvious, but might have something interesting. There are some things about the
European Car Free Day which is also tomorrow here, it would be nice to have less cars on the scary bit of road tomorrow anyway.
"This is an opportunity for car drivers to try a different and more sustainable way of traveling to work by leaving the car at home and walking, or taking a bus or train, or cycling around town."

Here are some pictures of Oban, I went up to Scotland for the biannual Challenger society oceanography conference. Some of these pics are from the afternoon trip to go look at the geology of Kerrera. It was quite impressive in bits, some of it was just looking at a not very pretty rock and being told its tale but the unconformities were quite impressive. Those are where you get 2 different rock types right next to each other. I got to take a step and travel a few million years in the rock record.
Here's wishing you all a great
Talk Like A Pirate Day - September 19

OOh, there's a whole section in the Guardian online on
the British Association science fair that I'm at this week at UEA. I'm in the perspectives bit with a pretty poster to show that scientists are people too.
