I'm a big fan of the Freecycle idea. People list things they want to get rid of and other people say I'd like them please. Saves stuff ending up straight in the landfill. I got a nice answerphone through it and hopefully a free is sofa on the way too (assuming it can get through the door).
There's different sites for each region, worth a look if you need shot of anything or are in need of something. You need to register to have a look at stuff I think.
